Published on 07/11/22
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to those of you who came to our Y8/9 Information Evening on Tuesday. It was lovely to be able to talk face to face again and we hope you found the evening useful. Information from the evening will be added to our website for those who were unable to attend.
This week you should have received an email regarding a vacancy for a Parent Governor. This is a chance to make a positive difference to the college, supporting the leadership team as we take the next important steps in the college’s development. If you want to put yourself forward for a Parent Governor position, please complete the form on our website, www.hopevalley-chorustrust.org/governance, by 12 noon on Friday 11 November 2022. Please note that your application should be supported by two sponsors who must be parents/carers of students in school. If you would like further information before deciding whether to stand, please contact info@chorustrust.org
What’s going on in school?
- Students from Y10 & 11 took part in screenings with CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) on Tuesday. Our hall was transformed into a screening centre and 102 students were screened on the day. Behaviour from all students was exemplary. The CRY team plan to return next academic year to continue this fantastic work.
- On Monday we had 13 Masters Level architects and their lecturer working with our Y9 and post 16 students. Students were able to find out more about Architecture as a profession and have a go at being creative! Our students took part in designing, modelling the redesign of some of school's buildings, learning how colour effects your environment while creating a mural in the quad (with clay tile embellishments), and learning how to construct a path, making our allotment wheelchair accessible. Great fun was had by all and lots of transferable skills were used! Special thanks to the University of Sheffield Lecturer and students for their time and energy, and to Breedon Cement works for supplying the materials for the path laying.

Our autumn Scholastic Book Fair arrives on Friday 18 November and will be open in the library each lunchtime of the following week. There will be a wide selection of top books for younger and older teens, all brand new and mostly at full RRP but some at discount. There will also be stationery and other items to buy. The first Friday will be a preview day when items can be reserved and paid for after the weekend. Any parents/carers wishing to view the books are most welcome to come in after school on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 up to 5pm. All sales earn us free books for the library, so this is a good way of supporting reading in school and providing really good up-to-date titles for our shelves.
- Year 8 English students are beginning their study of Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. To kick off their learning, they had the chance to see the play at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. On Wednesday afternoon, they set off for the theatre along with some of our GCSE drama students. Their reviews of the play were 'amazing', 'powerful' and 'thought provoking': they had so much to talk about on their return to English lessons on Thursday. Many thanks to Ms Worrall and her team for arranging the trip.
- Our Y9s and Y10s have been out and about having a go at lots of different outdoor activities:
-
ATL
ATL1 sheets have been handed to students this week and they are also stored on the Cloud School Parent App for you to view.
Outdoor Ed groups
Outdoor Ed groups change next week. This means that for BOTH Year 9 and 10:
Group B week A will be doing outdoor activities on Friday 11th November
Group B Week B will be doing their first session on Friday 18th of November.
Students should check the noticeboard in school to make sure they know whish group they are in. Please make sure that you have completed and returned the consent form which was sent to you at the beginning of the school year.
Job vacancy
We are currently recruiting for a part time Design Faculty Technician. We are looking for an enthusiastic, well organised, highly motivated and flexible individual. Water bottles for sale
All students should bring a water bottle to school, which can be refilled at break time and lunchtime. We do have some reusable bottles for sale at a cost of £1.50 each. Please ask at reception if you would like to purchase one.
