Principal's update 13 January 2023

Published on 13/01/23

Dear Parents and Carers

Happy New Year and welcome back to all our students!

Mr Fitton has launched the Duke of Edinburgh programme with Y10 students this week and we hope that many of them are inspired to take part in this brilliant programme. Y10 students begin their mock exams on Monday – we wish them the best of luck.

We have started talking to Y9 students about the Options process in assemblies this week and will continue to share information with them over the coming weeks to help them make decisions about Key Stage 4 subjects. Y9 parents should have received information about the Options Evening on Tuesday 24th January from 4.30pm – 7pm.

Details for the Y11 prom in Summer 2023 are being finalised, but it promises to be a unique and wonderful event. The date will be around 3rd July – more details will follow in due course.

Information regarding our upcoming LEAD day (Learning, Enrichment and Development) on Wednesday 1st February will be shared with you next week. This is an off-timetable day when we focus on certain aspects of our PSHE curriculum, with each year group taking part in different sessions and activities.

School of Rock

With only 10 weeks until our school production of The School of Rock rehearsals are back in full swing! We will notify you if there are any significant changes to this plan. Tickets for School of Rock will be released soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Any questions, please email Miss Starbuck or Mrs Machan.

Y10 mock exams

Y10 students will be starting their mock exams on Monday 16th January.  The timetable can be found on our website here - Exams - Hope Valley College (hopevalley-chorustrust.org).  Students have been handed their statement of entry today which details where they will be seated for each of their exams.

Immunisations

The School Age Immunisation Team will be in school on Thursday 19th January 2023 to administer Flu vaccinations for students in Years 7-9. Please ensure you have completed the consent form for your young person, otherwise they will not be able to receive their immunisation. Thank you.

Electronic Music Composition – free taster lessons

In January and February, peripatetic music teacher Matthew Laurie will be offering free taster lessons to students who would like to learn about Electronic Music Composition. These enjoyable lessons focus on creativity and performance and learning how to make music using synthesisers, drum machines, samplers, sequencers and iPad apps. Students can sign up for two free 20 minute lessons and will have the opportunity to write their own piece of music. If students wish to continue lessons then parents can contact Matthew Laurie to discuss available times and pricing.  T

Jazz Camp for Girls - The University of Sheffield

This is a one-day workshop taking place in the Department of Music at the University of Sheffield  on Saturday 25th February from 10am-4pm.  This is aimed at any instrument, including singing.  You don't need to have taken an instrumental exam, just be working at grade 1+.
