Principal's update 27 January 2023

Published on 27/01/23

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to all who attended our Y9 Options Evening on Tuesday – we hope you found the evening useful and you were able to find out more about subject choices at KS4. Option booklets have been given to students who were unable to attend and an electronic version is available on the school website: - Key Stage 4 Options - Hope Valley College (hopevalley-chorustrust.org)

Our Lead Day planned for Wednesday 1st February has unfortunately been postponed due to the planned strike action from members of the National Education Union. School will be closed to students on this day (Years 7 – 14). We are in the process of arranging remote learning and will share final details with parents and carers on Monday. This will involve students being directed to the school website to access work.

What’s going on in school:

On a frosty and misty January Saturday morning, a team of Hope Valley students went along to the Derbyshire Schools Cross Country Championship at Tupton School, Chesterfield.  They all did exceptionally well against the toughest opposition from the surrounding areas.  Two students went through to the ESAA English school's cross country championship in March 2023. They will go on to represent Derbyshire Schools and will be up against 46 other English counties. Well done to Anwen Y8 and Jack Y10. Also well done to Eva Y9, who narrowly missed out qualifying by one place.  We wish them well in the next round.

Y11 interventions – Friday 3 February

On Friday 3 February, a number of activities will be taking place in school that are different from usual lessons for some of our Year 11 students:

  • GCSE Art students will be in their Art exam all day
  • A grup of students will be in a Maths intervention programme all day - we will let them know separately.

Any GCSE D&T and GCSE Music students who are not in the above sessions will be in one of the following:

  • GCSE D&T students will be with Mr Beeden all mrning in the Design workshop.
  • GCSE Music students will be with Mrs Machan in small grups all morning.

All other students will be in their normal lessons.

Y11 mock exams

Y11 students will be starting their mock exams next Friday 3rd February with the Art exam with the rest following week commencing Monday 6th February.  The timetable can be found on our website here - Exams - Hope Valley College (hopevalley-chorustrust.org).  Students will be handed their statement of entry next week which will tell them when and where their exams will be.

Y11 Sheffield Sixth Form applications

Thank you to all students who have submitted applications. The deadline for any further applications is 31st January 2023 – this is set by Sheffield and therefore students who do not meet this deadline may be at a disadvantage.
