Principal's update 16 February 2024
Published on 16/02/24
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to those of you who attended our Y10 Subject Evening yesterday – we hope you found the evening useful. We hope you all have a relaxing break over half term. We look forward to seeing all students back in school on Monday 26 February 2024.
Uniform
Our school uniform is very straightforward. We ask for your support in ensuring your young person is in the correct uniform. We are very clear that leggings and jogging bottoms are part of PE kit and not uniform. After half term, we will be conducting uniform checks and any students not in uniform will be given a letter to bring home. We are aware that a small number of young people may need an additional adjustment and we may request further information to support this.
What’s going on in school:
- Today we are hosting BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions? Technicians have been busy setting up the hall, ready for the panel and audience to arrive this evening. The production team took time out of their schedule to meet with our Student Council and answer some of their questions.
- Upcoming football fixtures:
Tuesday 5 March KS4 Buxton away
Thursday 7 March Y7&9 home
Tuesday 12 March KS4 Chapel away
Tuesday 19 March Y7&8 home
Tuesday 26 March KS4 Glossop away
Tuesday 16 April Y7&8 home
- Sports Leaders helped to organise a netball tournament for our local primary children and did a fantastic job. All schools played really well and Bamford & Hathersage went through to the next round.
- Well done to our Sparx winners for this half term: Sophie in Y7, Jacob in Y8 and Esther in Y9. They will all receive a gift voucher for successfully completing their Sparx homework on time every week.
- The student council tallied all the votes from the Make Your Mark campaign. All votes were reported to the British Youth Council to count towards a nationwide total. Issues which matter to Hope Valley College students are 'Climate Change and the Environment', 'Jobs and the Economy' and 'Culture, Media and Sport'. 365 students voted in total, having their say on the issues which matter to them. If someone was absent and still wishes their voice to be heard, they can vote online.
- Last week, our outdoor activities group was unable to go weaselling due to the snow. Instead, we had a mini adventure near Surprise View and melted snow to make hot chocolate! The students were fantastic and got stuck in, especially given the cold, wet weather - well done!
- Congratulations to Daisy in Y8 who has been selected to attend a British Cycling BMX SX Regional School of Racing! This is a step on the talent pathway and riders are selected because they have consistently performed well and progressed at sessions and races. Well done Daisy!
- It was Y7’s turn to have a go at the interhouse rowing competition this week. Mamtor were the winners for the girls, whilst Winhill won in the boy’s competition. Mamtor were also victorious in the mixed competition. Well done to all involved!
