Principal's update 15 March 2024

Published on 15/03/24

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you for all your donations and support for Red Nose Day today. The Student Council were busy collecting cash donations during tutor time and our kitchen team made red nose cakes to celebrate. Donations can be made via ParentPay if you still wish to donate.

World Book Day was celebrated in true HVC fashion today, with members of staff and lots of students dressing up as characters from books. The English Faculty organised a quiz for students to complete, with the winners receiving a prize. Prizes also went to those with the most creative costume.

A reminder that students with a negative balance on their dinner money account will be asked to collect a note from reception before they can purchase food. If you are struggling to access your Parentpay account to top up dinner money credit, or if you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals, please contact us.

We have seen a lapse in uniform standards over the last few weeks and would like to remind students that whilst our school uniform is relaxed, we do still have certain rules and expectations. Joggers and leggings are only to be worn for PE lessons and are not part of normal school uniform. Students should wear a school hoodie or sweatshirt with the school logo on it, with a school polo shirt with logo on underneath. Thank you for your support in making sure that your young person wears the correct uniform.

What’s going on in school:

  • Y7 and Y9 boy’s football teams played at home against Buxton last Thursday. Both teams played well, but unfortunately conceded goals and lost their games. Well done to all who played.
  • Over the last few weeks, students in Y9 have been working with a research student from Sheffield Hallam University who is looking into the effects on mental well-being and lifestyle factors for KS3 students participating in outdoor learning. Students did really well answering questions and were very professional, explaining their views in an honest way. Well done to all who took part – this was a great opportunity and experience.

  • Y11 GCSE Art students visited Sheffield Hallam University last week for an art experience day. They spent the day working with undergraduate art students from a range of disciplines, including fine art, animation, 3D, jewellery, craft and printing. As well as experimenting with a range of different techniques, students also went on a tour of the university facilities.

  • Sports Leaders hosted children from local primary schools for a hockey tournament yesterday. They did a great job running the event.
  • Y11 Drama students completed their practical drama exam today and all did a great job! Congratulations – 60% of your course is complete!
  • On Thursday this week, HVC hosted the High Peak Netball Tournament for Y9, Y10 and Y11, with teams visiting from Glossop, Chapel and Buxton schools. With four pitches, four teams and six rounds, it was quite intense! Our Hope Valley teams were a credit to the school, with staff members from other schools commenting on their attitude, performance and professionalism. Thank you to the captains Connie, Flo, Skye and Ruby for coordinating the teams and score cards.  With an exceptional performance in their last game for HVC, our Y11 team were outstanding and fought until the very end, with a close win of 11-13. Well done girls! Y10 came second, as did Y9, only losing by two goals. Everyone worked really hard in tough conditions. Remember - training on Wednesday nights. See you all there!
  • Good luck to Anwen in Y9 who is representing Derbyshire in the English Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday. All the best Anwen, we hope the weather is kind to you!

Year 11 - 11.2 data and exam statement of entry

Y9 English Spoken Language Presentation

Over the coming weeks, all Y9 students will be planning, writing and delivering a spoken language presentation in their English lessons. We will conduct the assessment following JCQ guidelines and AQA English Language Spoken Language Endorsement guidelines.
