Principal's update 5 July 2024

Published on 05/07/24

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to all those who came along to our Music & Mayhem event on Saturday – we hope you had an enjoyable afternoon. Well done to all who took part and performed. Enormous thanks to our PTFA and Mrs Machan for organising this event and raising funds for our school.

What’s going on in school:

  • Student Council did an excellent job of running the mock elections in school. Everything ran smoothly and was well organised. We were delighted to give all students who wished to take part a taste of attending a polling station in preparation for when they become eligible to vote in the not-too-distant future.

  • Year 10 students have had the opportunity to learn about careers in the medical profession through interactive activities delivered by Medical Mavericks today. This is part of our CEIAG programme, which began last week with our careers fair and leads into work experience next week.  We hope that students have a positive week in the work place.
  • Our Y11 students attended their Prom on Monday evening, held at The Maynard in Grindleford. This was a lovely occasion and a celebration of all their hard work. Thank you to Mr Jenkinson, Ms Daniel and Ms Cottle for organising this event.
  • On Thursday this week, we welcomed our new Y7 cohort for September to school for their transition day. Our Student Ambassadors helped to make sure they found their way around school. Students took part in sessions including drama, PE and music, as well as a library lesson. We look forward to them joining our school community in September.
  • Budding DJs attended the free DJ workshop last Thursday with Ian Stanley.

Year 8 into 9 classes

We are in the process of finalising timetables and are sharing that we will be uncoupling the class group from the tutor groups as students move into Year 9.  Part of the reason we do is this is as preparation for Key Stage 4 where students will have different groups for every subject, but also to provide students with the opportunity to work with other young people in their year group.  Tutor groups will remain the same.

Free music taster lessons

Matt Laurie offers music technology, jazz/contemporary ukulele and tin whistle lessons at in school.  Matt is currently offering a free lesson for any student who would like to give any of these things a go. These lessons will be taking place before the end of term on 15 and 16 July and also in September when the new school term starts.
