Homework

There are different types of homework you might be asked to do.

• Consolidation tasks: using knowledge organisers, quizzing and practice exercises to consolidate the learning done in class

• Enrichment tasks: regular wider reading, Independent Learning projects, extended tasks and enrichment activities.

There is a homework calendar on the Hope Valley College website so that students can plan ahead and know when they will be set work. Students should also write down  homework instructions in the planner and tick off the tasks as they complete them. If you find it difficult to access online homework or need more help, you can come to homework club in ICT1 before school every day.

As well as this, teachers will share brief details of the homework set via Arbor.  You can see the assignments set on the Arbor parent portal or app.

You can visit this help page for more information about where to look: Arbor Parent Portal Help

Making Learning Stick- advice for students

After you have learned something new in class, you will begin gradually to forget what you were taught.

The best way to stop yourself from forgetting is to regularly review your learning. Use your knowledge organisers and class notes to help your learning stick.

 • Don’t just read – be active

• Get someone at home or a friend to test you on the information

 • See what you can remember by using ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’

 • Self quiz by writing questions and then trying to answer them without looking back at the information

 • Create flashcards with the key definitions on them

Reading

Apart from coming into school as much as you can, the most important thing you can do to improve your learning is to keep reading. We want you to develop your reading skills so that you can understand your lessons and be ambitious with the courses you study. We also know reading for pleasure is a good habit that will last you a lifetime.

 • Reading well will improve your performance in all your GCSE subjects – just as much in Maths and Science as in English.

 • Reading regularly helps you to develop as a person and explore who you are: it helps you to understand and relate to other people, especially if you are reading fiction.

• Reading is great for your wellbeing

• Use our amazing library - there’s something for everyone

• Ask for suggestions from Mrs Mummery or your teachers

• Take on our reading challenges

 • Join one of our book clubs to make reading a social occasion
