Principal's update 10 May 2024

Published on 10/05/24

Dear Parents and Carers

The formal GCSE exams series began yesterday for our Y11 students. We are sure that their hard work and resilience will stand them in good stead and we wish them all the best for their exams.

Our KS3 Assemblies this week have focused on Assessments. Students in Y7, 8 and 9 will have classroom-based assessments in some of their subjects over the next few weeks, focusing on topics they have studied over the year. These assessments will consolidate students’ learning and identify any gaps. More information about KS3 assessments will be available on our website shortly.

What’s going on in school:

  • Another outstanding performance from the KS4 boy’s football team saw them beat Chapel School 4-1 earlier this week. Despite also missing a penalty and playing on a pitch not conducive to our passing style, goals from James, Jaden and two from the outstanding Harry saw us come out deserved winners. A massive congratulations to all involved.
  • Pastoral Gardening Club have been busy on the allotment, digging out the old pond that was in danger of collapsing. They carefully rescued the pondlife, before re-digging and lining the hole and refilling. Next week they will smarten the pond up with stone and pebbles and plant up the area. Our students, under the fantastic site management of Ellis in Y7, showed truly exceptional teamwork. They also managed to plant sunflowers, radishes, a blueberry bush and pompom daisies all in one afternoon. We are so proud of them.

  • This week Y9 drama students have gone above and beyond preparing for their current drama assessment. One group have created their own puppet show to tell the plot of DNA by Dennis Kelly. Well done Monty, Rex and Ruben!

  • Y7 are studying Ukulele this term. They have labelled each part of the ukulele and we are learning to play chords and melodies, using chord charts and tabs.  Y7 students can practise every Tuesday 12:40-1pm. Y8 are studying 'Pachelbel's Canon' and the Baroque Era this term.  They are working in groups to perform their own canon. Y8 can practise every Wednesday 12:40-1pm.  Y9 are studying film and gaming music this term.  We have listened to different genres of music, including action, spy, mystery, horror and western.  They are learning to write about how the music represents each style. This is great preparation for any student choosing to study GCSE music and makes great use of their literacy skills. Y9 can practise every Friday 12:40-1pm.  Y10 are working on their first composition, based on a ground bass. They are all making excellent progress with this.  They are also preparing for their end of Y10 performing recorded exam that will take place W/C 17th June. Y11 are in the final stages of revision for their GCSE music exam. They will all be given a revision pack with links to websites during the last week of this half term.

Our PTFA are looking forward to their next event - Music and Mayhem on Saturday 29 June from 11am until 4pm. There will be music performances, races and fete styles games for everyone to join in. Fingers crossed that we have another sunny day like last year! There will be a lunchtime BBQ, plus cake stall and ice creams and refreshments available to purchase all day.

If your young person would like to perform this year, please keep an eye out for an email with a form for you to complete.

We will be sending out a request closer to the time for cake donations but would love to hear from anyone who would be able to help on the day with serving refreshments, on the stalls and marshalling. Also, we would be grateful if anyone could let us borrow freestanding gazebos for the event. Please get in touch via email PTFAhv@hopevalley.chorustrust.org. Thank you.
